Michael was educated at Barrow Grammar School and Kings' College, London. He worked as a journalist before obtaining an LLM in Labour Law at University College, London in 1990. From 1992 to 2000, he lectured at University College, Northampton. He joined Kingston Law School in 2000 as a Senior Lecturer and progressed to Principal Lecturer in 2005.


UK employment and labour law; agency workers and migrant workers; trade union recognition; psychiatric injury.

Research Interest(s)

Michael's research interests are in labour law and social thought. He has published in the areas of European labour law, the contract of employment, equality law, working time and trade union recognition. 

He is currently working on aspects of law and policy relating to employment status and temporary agency workers and on aspects of employee voice at work.


Michael teaches Employment Law and Tort on the LLB and Individual Employment Law and Labour Law in the Global Economy on the LLM. He also supervises students on PHd, LLM and LLB programmes.


Michael is an Accredited Mediator and advises on matters of UK employment law
