Undergraduate Law Courses

The Law School has a long and excellent reputation for providing undergraduate courses designed to meet the demands of today's organisations and the ever changing global economy. Our courses suit the needs of students regardless of whether they wish to qualify as a lawyer or study the theories of law alongside antoher subject.

  • International Law LLB(Hons) single honours

This qualifying law degree enables you to give your legal studies an international focus. The course prepares you to train as a solicitor or barrister once you graduate, as it covers the foundations of legal knowledge required by the legal professional bodies.

    What will you study?

Core LLB modules cover the 'foundations of legal knowledge' subjects and skills such as case reading, research, the use of law libraries and IT. You will also focus on international law topics such as environmental protection, public international law, international trade and the free movement of goods, persons and services within the EU.

    What our students say

  • Law (with Arts and Social Sciences subjects) BA/BSc(Hons) joint honours only

This course enables you to study a half or minor field in law in combination with a range of arts and social science subjects.

A half or minor field in Law complements many subjects. Knowledge of the legal system will be useful in whatever career field you enter, and you will also develop your analytical and problem-solving skills. If you decide you would like to enter the legal profession on graduation, you may be able to apply for some subject exemptions for the CPE (conversion) course.

    What will you study?

The law field provides an introduction to the sources of English law and how it is made and developed, together with some of the fundamental principles and rules of law.

See the course combinations section for more information about the different joint honours options.

  • Law BA(Hons) single honours

The Law BA(Hons) field has been designed for those students who are interested in studying law but who do not necessarily intend to pursue a career in the legal profession. It has a broader focus than our LLB courses and is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills suitable for a range of different careers, such as in business, politics, and the police to name but a few.

Students who achieve lower second class marks or above, in all of their level four assessments will be eligible to request transfer to the second year of the LLB, if they wish to do so.

    What will you study?

You will learn about the role of law in society, the English legal system, and how law structures the state. You will also study core areas of criminal law, contract law and tort law (ie civil wrongs and trespass).

Students will also have a dedicated module in their first and second year of study which focuses on specific careers both related, and non related to the legal profession, for which the degree forms a good basis. Students will learn practical skills which relate to these career paths and learn about relevant recruitment processes and techniques.

A wide range of option modules enables you to study skills such as mediation and topics such as immigration law, medical law or employment law. In addition, you will have the option to undertake a year-long work placement, meaning you graduate in four years instead of three.

  • Law LLB(Hons) single honours

Kingston's LLB programme provides the underpinning knowledge you will need to train as a solicitor or barrister once you graduate. You can either choose to take this 'pure' LLB course or include a minor field in Business or Criminology within your law degree.

    What will you study?

At the core of every LLB degree are the 'foundations of legal knowledge' required by the legal professional bodies. These comprise contract law, tort law, criminal law, equity and the law of trusts, European law, property law and public law. You will also learn skills such as case reading, research, the use of law libraries and IT. The remainder of your degree will be made up of option modules.

    What our students say

  • Law Senior Status LLB(Hons) single honours

This accelerated route of our LLB course is designed for graduates of non-law subjects who wish to follow a career in the legal profession. Students who obtain at least an upper second-class degree are guaranteed places in the Legal Practice Course at the College of Law, provided they select the College as their first choice.

The Law Senior Status LLB(Hons) course differs from our one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Law ('conversion course') in that it offers a qualifying law degree.

  • Law with Business LLB(Hons) joint honours only

This pathway enables you to include a minor field of business studies within your qualifying law degree. It is equally suitable whether you plan to train as a lawyer, or to seek a career in business, industry and administration.

    What will you study?

The business element of the course is similar to major-field business courses within Kingston Business School but covers fewer areas, focusing on finance and accounting, human resource management and marketing. You will take all the LLB compulsory core modules, together with law option modules, which can be chosen to complement your business focus.

    What our students say

  • Law with Criminology LLB(Hons) joint honours only

This pathway enables you to include a minor field of criminology within your qualifying law degree. The curriculum includes the core LLB Foundations of Legal Knowledge subjects, together with core criminology modules at each level.

Criminology is the study of crime in society, so law and criminology are complementary subjects.

    What will you study?

You will apply the study of sociology, psychology, politics and economics to an understanding of the major questions in law making, law breaking and law enforcement. The course enables you to investigate questions such as the nature of criminal behaviour, why individuals commit crime, how and why the definition of crime changes over time and between societies, and how society should deal with criminal activity.
