Our courses suit the needs of new entrants to specialist areas as well as those with more advanced strategic aims and those seeking professional career progression. Law courses can be studied full-time or part-time to suit whichever method you feel will enhance your study experience.

  • Corporate and Financial Law LLM


    Start Dates:
    January and September
    Mode of Delivery: Full-time, Part-time

    The Corporate and Financial Law LLM provides you with the opportunity to acquire a detailed knowledge and understanding of legal rules relating to business.

    Students who successfully complete the Corporate and Financial LLM will have acquired significant research and analytical skills in this area of law. They should therefore have substantially enhanced their prospects of gaining employment as professional or in-house legal advisors, company administrators and in other areas of work where the ability to apply and advise upon business law issues is significant.

    What will you study?

    You take two core modules; two option modules from an extensive list; plus legal research theory and dissertation modules.

  • Criminology with Law MA


    Start Dates:
    September
    Mode of Delivery: Full-time, Part-time

    This masters programme offers a very flexible programme of taught modules, with the opportunity to create a programme of study designed to suit your own interests and aspirations within the areas of Criminology and Law.

    Students who successfully complete the course will acquire significant research and analytical skills in the relevant area of law. They should therefore have substantially enhanced their prospects of gaining employment as, for example, professional or in-house legal advisors and in other areas of work where the ability to apply and advise upon legal issues is significant.

    What will you study?

    This course can be combined as either a major (LLM) or minor (MA/MSc) award. If you take law as a major award, you take 90 credits of law modules and 30 credits of Criminology modules, plus a dissertation (60 credits); if you take law as a minor award, you take 90 credits of Criminology modules and 30 credits of law modules, plus a dissertation (60 credits).

  • Dispute Resolution LLM


    Start Dates:
    January and September
    Mode of Delivery: Full-time, Part-time

    The Dispute Resolution LLM provides you with the opportunity to acquire a detailed knowledge and understanding of legal rules relating to dispute resolution.

    On successful completion of the programme, you will have acquired significant research and analytical skills in this area of law. You should therefore have substantially enhanced your prospects of gaining employment in dispute resolution departments of professional law firms or in other areas of work where the ability to resolve disputes is significant.

    What will you study?

    You take two core modules; two option modules from an extensive list; plus legal research theory and dissertation modules.

    On successful graduation, you are also automatically eligible for membership of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

  • Employment Law LLM


    Start Dates:
    January and September
    Mode of Delivery: Full-time, Part-time

    The Employment Law LLM provides students with the opportunity to acquire a detailed knowledge and understanding of the legal rules relating to employment. Students will gain a critical understanding of the role of social, political and economic policy in the formulation of modern labour laws, both in the UK and with reference to international labour standards.

    Students who successfully complete the Employment Law LLM will have acquired significant research and analytical skills in this area of law. They should therefore have substantially enhanced their prospects of gaining employment in professional legal private practice, human resource management and other areas of work where the ability to apply and advise upon employment law issues is significant.

    What will you study?

    You take two core modules; two option modules from an extensive list; plus legal research theory and dissertation modules.

    On successful graduation you are also automatically eligible for membership of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

  • Environmental Law and Sustainability LLM


    Start Dates:

    Mode of Delivery: Full-time, Part-time

    The Environmental Law and Sustainability LLM is one of the cross-faculty multidisciplinary courses under the umbrella of the Sustainability Hub developed with the objectives to addressing priorities related to the environmental and sustainability in a multidisciplinary way.

    The essence of the Environmental Law and Sustainability LLM is that, within an advanced academic context, you will engage with a range of legal issues relating to the environment and sustainability. Matters considered will include, for example, the legal framework for the protection of the environment; the legal rules and policies relating to environmental protection within the European Union and at the international level; the concept of sustainability as a policy consideration and its contribution to informing the legal protection of the environment; and the impact of international economic law on the policies relating to sustainability.

    On completion of the programme, you will have advanced your knowledge and understanding, and enhanced your appreciation, of a range of issues of contemporary importance relating to the environment and sustainability. 

    What will you study?

    You take two core modules; two option modules from an extensive list; plus legal research theory and dissertation modules. You may also choose postgraduate modules related to the environment from other departments of the University, in particular  the Faculty of Science (Geology, Geography and the Environment School) and the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (School of Planning). This possibility enhances multidisciplinary perspectives in the understanding and study of the environment and its protection.

  • General Law LLM

    The General Law LLM provides you with the opportunity to take advantage of a very flexible programme of taught modules and create a programme of study designed to suit your own interests and aspirations.

    Students who successfully complete the Law LLM will have acquired significant research and analytical skills. They should therefore have substantially enhanced their prospects of gaining employment as professional or in-house legal advisors, company administrators and in other areas of work where the ability to apply and advise upon legal issues is significant.

    You take four option modules from an extensive list, plus a research module and a dissertation.

  • Human Rights with Law MA

  • Immigration Law LLM


    Start Dates:
    January and September
    Mode of Delivery: Full-time, Part-time

    The Immigration Law LLM provides an advanced academic environment for studying legal issues relating to immigration and examining immigration law in its theoretical, operational, social and political context. Matters considered will include, for example, the rules relating to entry and habitation within the UK; immigration and freedom of movement within the European Union; asylum and immigration appeals and remedies; and refugees.

    On completion of the programme, you will have advanced your knowledge and understanding, and enhanced your appreciation, of a range of issues of contemporary importance relating to immigration.

    What will you study?

    You take two core modules; two option modules from an extensive list; plus legal research theory and dissertation modules.

    On successful graduation, students on the Immigration Law LLM are also automatically eligible for membership of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

  • International Commercial Law LLM


    Start Dates:
    January and September
    Mode of Delivery: Full-time, Part-time

    The main aims of the International Commercial Law LLM are to give you the opportunity to acquire a detailed knowledge and understanding of legal rules relating to international commerce and the resolution of disputes; and to develop the ability to analyse, evaluate and reflect upon these rules.

    Students who successfully complete the International Commercial Law LLM will have acquired significant research and analytical skills in this area of law. They should therefore have substantially enhanced their prospects of gaining employment in professional legal private practice, business or legal consultancy in industry.

  • Law PgDip


    Start Dates:
    September
    Mode of Delivery: Part-time

    This course is an innovative and exciting course for non-law graduates who wish either to enter the legal profession or to acquire legal knowledge and skills to progress in other careers.

    Our Law PgDip satisfies all the requirements of the professional bodies who determine how a non-law graduate can enter the profession but also gives you a postgraduate qualification in law. Upon completion, graduates may top up their qualification up to a masters degree by enrolling in the Legal Studies MA.

    The course provides you with the essential understanding of law and legal reasoning required for practice whilst developing the critical thinking and appreciation of legal debate and scholarship that you would expect of a postgraduate degree.

    What will you study?

    An intensive induction week introduces you to the substantive law governing the English legal system together with the legal skills you will need to use throughout the course.

    These skills are developed throughout the rest of the first semester as you go on to study the Foundations of Legal Knowledge. These are the seven subjects that are essential for your progression into the profession – the law of contract; criminal law; public law; the law governing civil wrongs; the rights and interests over land and property; the principles of equity and trusts; and the law of the European Union.

    You will also have the opportunity to study an area of law outside these Foundations subjects by undertaking a research project chosen from a very wide range of areas of law.

  • Law with English LLM


    Start Dates:
    September
    Mode of Delivery: Full-time, Part-time

    This course allows you to develop your English language proficiency at the same time as increasing your knowledge of a particular area or areas of law. It provides you with advanced legal knowledge as well as the practical skills and techniques needed to enhance your career prospects, whether in legal or commercial practice.

    It also develops your awareness and understanding of aspects of UK and international social and business cultures and practices.

    What will you study?

    In addition to improving your English language skills, you choose from an extensive range of taught legal modules. This offers you the flexibility to tailor the programme to your own interests and career aspirations. You will also gain significant research and analytical skills, and your dissertation provides further opportunity to gain specialist expertise in an area of particular relevance.

  • Law with Finance LLM

    Start Dates: September / January
    Mode of Delivery: Full-time

    This course allows you to develop a knowledge and understanding of finance whilst at the same time increase your knowledge of a particular area or areas of law. It provides you with advanced legal knowledge as well as the practical skills and techniques needed to enhance your career prospects, whether in legal or commercial practice.

    It also develops your awareness and understanding of aspects of UK and international social and business cultures and practices.

    What will you study?

    In addition to improving your financial skills, you choose from an extensive range of taught legal modules. This offers you the flexibility to tailor the programme to your own interests and career aspirations.   • Law with Law of International Trade LLM

    Start Dates: January and September
    Mode of Delivery: Full-time, Part-time

    The LLM Law with Law of International Trade provides you with the opportunity to take advantage of a very flexible programme of taught modules by creating a programme of study designed to suit your interests and aspirations.

    What will you study?

    You take four option modules from an extensive list, plus a research module and a dissertation.

    On successful graduation you are also automatically eligible for membership of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

  • Legal Studies MA


    Start Dates:
    September and January
    Mode of Delivery: Part-time

    The Legal Studies MA provides an opportunity for students who hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Law (or equivalent)  to 'top up' to a masters qualification. The course aims to develop your research and investigative skills, alongside a critical and research-oriented approach to the study of a chosen area of law.

    What will you study?

    This course provides a practical avenue for you to research a particular area of law that interests you and, using various methodologies and analytical skills, produce an extended piece of writing.

    You will first concentrate on the development of your skills in advanced legal research and the use of theory to support it. You will then move on to construct and produce your own research piece within your choice of legal interest, demonstrating all the skills you have learnt.
